Power from the body
Effective strokes use torso rotation and a stable kneeling platform rather than pulling only with the arms. Keep the paddle working close to the hull and allow the canoe’s edges to help shape the turn.
Build a reliable base
Before concentrating on tricks, develop confident forward strokes, draws, cross-draws, pries, stern corrections and braces on both sides. The offside is not optional in freestyle.
Cross-deck control
Cross-deck strokes let an OC1 paddler work on the opposite side without changing hands. Good rotation and a compact recovery make these strokes quicker and reduce strain.
Edges and trim
Freestyle features respond to small changes. Leaning the hull is different from collapsing the upper body. Keep the head active, move the hips deliberately and feel how forward or rearward trim changes the boat’s release.
Train progressively
Practise new movements on flat water, then in forgiving eddies and small features before moving to more powerful water.
- Warm up shoulders, hips and ankles
- Use short, focused practice blocks
- Film a few attempts rather than every ride
- Rest before technique becomes untidy
