Open canoe, one paddler
OC1 means open canoe, one person, with no spraydeck. The paddler kneels and uses a single-bladed paddle. Modern competition boats are short, highly rockered and designed to release from the water for spins, cartwheels, loops and aerial moves.
How it differs from K1 or C1
The most obvious difference is the open area, which allows a minimum of 40 litres of water in the boat while paddling. The next obvious difference is the size. Open canoes must follow a strict set of rules: the boat must be at least 37.5 cm tall for a minimum continuous length of 80 cm, and the open area must measure at least 3,800 cm². These requirements mean OC1 boats appear quite large compared with K1 and C1 kayaks.
Why paddle OC1? Why wouldn’t you?
OC1 rewards timing, balance and creative use of a much larger boat. The learning curve can be demanding, but many paddlers love the strong connection with the boat and the distinct style of canoe moves.

OC1 is a recognised canoe freestyle class at many national and international events. Always check the organiser’s published categories, because class availability and age groupings can vary.
